Do you paint from photos?
For the most part, yes. I do "paint from life" as well
(see example at right), but most clients don't have the time,
plus there are benefits to using photography as part of the process
- I can capture seasons, home environments, and most importantly,
capture the subjects' subtle personality that comes through.

How
long does it take?
It depends. On average, it takes under six months from the
photo session, but this may be affected… if you have
a desire to have the setting in a certain season, how busy
I may be (fall is very busy), etc. If you are interested in
having a portrait made, but at a future date, I invite you
to let me know, and I can make
sure to call you at the right time.
Do you have
a price "list"?
Portrait commissions are sometimes priced by the amount of
body parts showing (i.e. head and shoulders, 3/4 length ).
Instead I can give example quotes based on existing works,
and I think that will give you a idea.
Of
course if you want just a "head and shoulders", that's
fine. I determine price by an overall judgement on size and composition.
I think this makes for a better painting that both of us will be
happy with.
What
if I have a photo I'd like painted?
I have painted from client photography in the special situations
that warrant it - Bringing to "life" a old photo or a
face from a younger age, incorporating an out-of-town sibling into
a family portrait, or a posthumus portrait.
When
is the right age to have a portrait done of my child?
If you are interested in having a portrait made of a child or adolescent
there really is no age that isn't a great age to paint them at.
Also, you don't need to avoid or wait until after an "awkward
age". There are portraits here on this site of chidren 11 months
to 18 years.

I
would like to give a portrait as a gift, and I know they would want
to be involved with the process. How can I go about this?
